Steven Gerrard makes Alfredo Morelos Rangers ban admission as Ibrox boss calls for disciplinary process 'consistency'

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted the club had no defence for Alfredo Morelos after the striker was hit with a three game ban for a stamp on Ryan Porteous.

But the Ibrox gaffer has called for more consistency in how incidents are dealt with by the SFA and revealed the club are working to try find a way to improve the process.

Morelos was banned for the second time this season after being cited for incidents and there is a belief that others have escaped punishment for similar incidents.

'Trial by TV' has become a catchphrase in Scottish football and some Rangers supporters wanted the club to fight the ban for Morelos on a point of principal.

But Gerrard insists the club have taken a quieter approach and aren't in the business of being noisy with statements, as they have been in the past.

He said: "I think as a club it’s something we’ve spoken about in great detail. Everyone is aligned and together we’ve tried to dial the noise down around the club, the unnecessary noise.

"Part of that is to accept the ban for Alfredo. I’ve looked at the incident a lot of times now and I don’t think there’s a case for us to defend in this situation.

"Having said that, it doesn’t mean we’re pleased with everything that happened in that game or previously during the season so it is something behind the scenes that myself and the board are working hard on to try and find better solutions, in terms of the disciplinary and the processes that go on.

"It’s something we’ll continue to try and be a support to with the authorities to try make things better and more consistent.

"So, it’s obviously disappointing from my point of view not to have Alfredo available. It is what it is but my focus is now on the players who are available to us and trying to get another important result tomorrow."

Gerrard refused to go into too much detail on what he felt needed to change within the compliance officer protest but did call for consistency in their decisions.

When asked for what he felt needed changed, he said: "Consistencies.

"That’s my answer. Consistencies. That’s what every manager wants, a level of consistency for every player. For every incident, if you like, to be judged in the same way so we find that level of consistency, I think it will really help the league moving forward."

Darren McGregor was one player who escaped a ban despite a similar incident to what Morelos has been banned for with Glen Kamara, but Gerrard admitted it would be futile for him to have a say on that particular incident.

He responded: "Not my player. I think a decision has been made. That decision I can’t control or effect that decision now so it makes no sense for me to comment on it."
