Steven Gerrard lifts lid on "secret" Sir Alex Ferguson chats since becoming Rangers boss

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard declares he has "parked his rivalry" with Sir Alex Ferguson and says he has had many conversations with the Manchester United icon in recent seasons.

Liverpool legend Gerrard faced off with Ferguson's Red Devils for almost 15 years during many heated North-West derbies.

The rivalry between Liverpool and United is one of the fiercest in the Premier League, with Ferguson famously claiming his goal was to "knock Liverpool off their perch" during his glittering Old Trafford tenure.

But Gerrard says his sporting competition with Ferguson has been put on hold, with the 79-year-old making himself available to give him managerial pointers.

"I’ll let you into a little secret: I’ve had a couple of conversations with him,” Gerrard said of Ferguson after he was named Manager of the Year by the Scottish Football Writers' Association.

"Since I retired we have parked our rivalry up and he gave me time on the phone to bounce a few things off him, a few questions to do with the management up here at Rangers."

Ferguson managed clubs including St Mirren and Aberdeen before taking over as United boss in 1986.

His knowledge of the Scottish game has clearly proved invaluable to Gerrard, who led Rangers to their first league title in a decade in March.

The former England captain - who was appointed Gers boss in 2018 - added: "He (Ferguson) was fantastic in those conversations. At some point moving forward I’d love the chance to sit down with him and have a coffee.

"He’s agreed to that and that’s fantastic from his point of view because he doesn’t have to give me his time, especially being a rival, but I think that goes to show what type of man he is. He’s not just the iconic manager we all know."

Gerrard will lead his champions to Livingston on Wednesday evening as the Scottish Premiership season winds down.
