Steven Gerrard leads Rangers players in poignant Fernando Ricksen tribute outside Ibrox

Steven Gerrard and his Rangers players paid personal tributes to Fernando Ricksen by laying a wreath outside Ibrox on Thursday afternoon.

The Light Blues squad gathered around the John Greig statue outside the stadium to add to the shrine for the iconic full-back who lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease on Wednesday aged just 43.

A message on the club's tribute read: "Your fighting spirit knew no bounds. We will always remember.

"From all your friends at Rangers Football Club."

Gerrard called upon his players to get a win against Feyenoord in this evening's Europa League group stage opener in tribute to Ricksen.

He said: "I'm sure there will be a lot of emotion in the stadium and Fernando deserves that. We need the support to get right behind the team to try and get that win for Fernando.

"I'm sure the supporters are very sad at this time and we want to do everything we can to get a win and dedicate it to Fernando."

A minute's silence will be held before tonight's match and Rangers players will wear black armbands in memory of Ricksen.

Supporters have laid tributes in memory of the Dutchman who spent six years at Ibrox after signing from AZ Alkmaar in 2000.

He won two league titles in his time at Ibrox, including the treble year of 2002/03. Ricksen was also capped 12 times by his country.

Last night Feyenoord manager Jaap Stam paid his own tribute, laying flowers outside Ibrox.
