Steven Gerrard 'knows every Rangers academy star's name' as head of youth details his impact

Rangers academy chief Craig Mulholland has revealed Steven Gerrard's impact on the club's youth academy - including a classy personal touch.

Gerrard has taken a keen interest in the youth setup since his arrival last year, involving academy kids in training sessions and his matchday squads.

He's also been spotted at Rangers youth matches in his quest to overhaul the club from top to bottom.

But Mulholland insists it's Gerrard's attention to detail that has most impressed him.

He says the Ibrox boss knows the name of every player, right down to the earliest age groups, including their strengths and weaknesses.

Speaking to the Rangers website, Mulholland opened up on the impact Gerrard and his first-team coaches have had - in particular Michael Beale.

He said: "The gaffer has been fantastic. He has been to watch right down to our under-11s and 12s, and he knows every player.

"We’ve had Nathan Young-Coombes come up from Chelsea and he said at that club the first team manager wouldn’t know your name at the age Nathan is at.

"Steven knows all of the young players in the academy as well as their strengths and weaknesses.

“22 players have trained with the first team from the academy this season. Gary McAllister has been at a lot of the games, as have Colin Stewart and Tom Culshaw. And Michael Beale,I would like to give a special mention to. He is the one who actually speaks to Graeme Murty and myself every day.

“He has worked at Chelsea’s academy, he has worked at Liverpool’s academy, and Michael has been really supportive but also has a raft of knowledge which has been beneficial in developing our programme."
