Steven Gerrard issues Rangers 'no excuses' warning as he points to the mental aspect that will be key to Motherwell clash

Steven Gerrard insists no European excuses will be accepted and has urged Rangers to focus their minds on Motherwell.

The Ibrox boss believes only a similar display to the one that dismantled Willem II on Thursday night will be good enough at Fir Park.

A win over Stephen Robinson’s side this afternoon will cement the Ibrox club’s place at the Premiership summit.

And Gerrard has called on his side to go full steam ahead after their Europa League qualification
exertions in the Netherlands.

He said: “It’s even stevens if you like from the kick-off, there are certainly no excuses from where we are. We have to be prepared to put in a good performance because we have to try to take maximum points.

“We’re looking for focus, similar to what we showed on Thursday.

“We have always had a difficult challenge down at Motherwell, Stephen has his team fired up.

“They are a big team in terms of profile and they will come and give us a right physical challenge.

“It’s a game we’re looking forward to but we have to be right from a mental point of view and make sure we recover well.

“It’s good for us that Motherwell have had a similar week in terms of what they have had to put into their week with the travel. It seems like they have had a tough game.”

Well’s Europa League campaign ended on
Thursday at the hands of Hapoel Beer-Sheva in Israel.

And gaffer Robinson said: “We’ve got a way of playing that we think can win football matches and Sunday will be no different.

“I think going back home on Friday will actually be an advantage for us.

“We were able to get a good eight hours of sleep before going home and preparing for Rangers.

“It will be an even harder game. I believe Rangers are a better side than what we faced on Thursday so it’s another tough ask.”
