Steven Gerrard insists Rangers players showed 'outstanding discipline and control' in win against Celtic

Steven Gerrard has praised the "outstanding discipline" shown by Rangers as they came out on top against Celtic.

James Tavernier and Scott Arfield struck to secure a comfortable win for the home side, as Neil Lennon's men struggled to match their intensity.

The Ibrox boss said his players were more "controlled" than they were in the 1-0 win against their rivals in December.

Gerrard said: "We deserve a lot of praise because we were outstanding from start to finish and we were better in every department.

"I think we did it with more control, with more style.

Has Rangers winger Ryan Kent dropped hint over his future with gesture in win against Celtic?

"We played with slightly too much emotion in the first one here but it's normal because we hadn't won an Old Firm for too long.

"We had more emotional control and our discipline was outstanding today."

When asked about an incident between Jon Flanagan and Scott Brown, which saw the former receive a booking, he said: "I'm not interested in that.

"What I'm interested in is that the supporters can enjoy the beer tonight and enjoy an Old Firm win.

"We haven't lost this league on Old Firm performances or results. We know what we need to do.

"The team that came here today have won the league and a cup, and they're about to probably win another cup so we have to show respect.

That's what football's about. Today is about Rangers simple."

However, Gerrard admitted his side need to improve elsewhere if they are to challenge Celtic next season.

He said: "The players were outstanding, they've been outstanding for me for the majority of the year so they deserve a lot of praise.

"They deserve all the credit today.

"It's an important victory, not so much for now but moving forward. We know where we've fallen short and where we need to improve. "
