Steven Gerrard insists Rangers got better result as he declares 'we're the champions'

Happy Rangers boss Steven Gerrard insists it was a better result for his side than Celtic after getting a 1-1 draw at Parkhead.

And he declared himself delighted that he could go to Celtic Park and keep their unbeaten run going as champions of Scotland.

The Ibrox manager watched on as he saw Alfredo Morelos end his Celtic hoodoo by getting his first goal against their Old Firm rivals.

It was the equaliser in the 1-1 draw and it's fair to say Gerrard was just happy to keep the unbeaten run going, and insists it was a better result because Celtic had so long to prepare.

Rangers had played twice in the Europa League and had a tough preparation with the treatment of Glen Kamara in the defeat to Slavia Prague.

And Gerrard told Sky Sports: "It was a good game, both teams tried to win, tried to be really positive with our substitutions during the game.

"We’re away from home, we’re the champions, we’ve taken seven points out of nine, we’re still 20 points clear, this is a more positive result for us than them.

"Very pleased. Always pleased when players score and they’re in a good place. He’s been magnificent for us and his contribution has been really big.

"He’ll be really relieved to get that monkey off his back in terms of scoring here. He did some really good bits here.

"If you look and analyse us, we lacked a bit of energy, we’ve had a real journey in the last two or three weeks.

"Celtic has had a lot of preparation time for us, a lot of free time to prepare for this, ours have been different.

"We’re pleased with the point, we came here to win but we’ll take the point and move on.

"We said that to the players, Celtic are going to have periods of the game, they’ve got good footballers, they can be a handful to handle so sometimes you have to soak that up, but it’s important to stay in games and try and restrict them if you can."

"They played well at times but over the course of the 90 minutes they still haven’t been able to beat us which is a positive from my point of view."
