Steven Gerrard in Rangers exit 'destiny' claim as former teammate reveals reunion dream

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is only destined to leave Ibrox for Liverpool according to former teammate Djimi Traore.

Gerrard says he is happy in Glasgow amid the intense links to Newcastle, following the Premier League club's decision to sack Steve Bruce as manager.

Gerrard has been tipped long-term to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager. It's where he made himself a legend and icon of English football as a player.

Traore played with Gerrard during the Rangers boss' stint as Anfield captain, winning the Champions League together in 2005 during Liverpool's famous night in Istanbul against AC Milan.

Traore - who left his role as assistant coach at MLS side Seattle Sounders in August - believes it's a matter of when, not if Gerrard replaces Klopp as Anfield boss.

"I will not think about being Liverpool manager because that is for Steven Gerrard," Traore told the Guardian. "It is his destiny and I hope when Klopp retires the club gives the job to Steven.

“He’s doing a fantastic job at Rangers and shown his character and desire to improve as a coach.”

While ruling himself out of becoming manager, Traore did not shy away from potentially becoming Gerrard's Liverpool assistant, adding: "You never know."
