Steven Gerrard in 'mediocre' Rangers billing as Poland job credentials blasted with 'Russian roulette' claim

Steven Gerrard managed two 'mediocre' sides according to a former Polish star as the ex-Rangers boss was linked with the vacant national team post.

The former Aston Villa boss has experienced two managerial posts following a storied playing career, winning one trophy from a potential nine in Glasgow with Rangers after wrestling back the Scottish Premiership title from rivals Celtic in a three-plus-year stint in Glasgow. Gerrard then upped sticks for Villa Park where he lasted just over a year in post after a poor run of form in the English Premier League.

Now the Liverpool icon is being linked to the international post at Poland, with the likes of South Korea boss Paulo Bento, and ex-Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic also in the frame. But former Polish World Cup star Radosław Kaluzny - who played 41 times for his country - is pleading that Gerrard's name be cast away from the shortlist.

He said: "I would remove Gerrard from this list immediately. We need a good manager, not a good ex-player. The Englishman was an excellent player, but today he is an apprentice in the management profession. He managed two mediocre clubs and didn't do that good a job at either of them.

"Entrusting him with our team would be like a game of Russian roulette. The national team is not a training ground for managers who want to practice.

"I have no problem choosing a foreign coach, but not Gerrard. One with international experience would be good and someone who won't leave at the first sign of a club job."
