Steven Gerrard in Crystal Palace manager link as former Rangers boss has key trait suited to Eagles

Steven Gerrard has been tipped to take over from Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace and his playing style could suit the English Premier League side.

The Frenchman was sacked earlier today after presiding over a 12-game winless run which stretched back to December last year. Palace are currently in 12th position in the league but only three points above the relegation zone. Vieira's last game in charge was the defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday evening on the south coast. Former Crystal Palace captain Paddy McCarthy will take charge of the their trip to Arsenal on Sunday following the sacking.

Ex-Palace manager Roy Hodgson is the favourite to take over, but Gerrard and Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou are also in the betting. The former Rangers boss has been out of a job since October last year after he was sacked by Aston Villa. He has been linked with Leeds United, Poland and Trabzonspor in Turkey.

Gerrard liked to play with wingers at Ibrox with Ryan Kent being one of his most influential stars during his time in Govan. Palace also play with wingers and Wilfried Zaha is their star man. His style may suit the Palace board who said a new boss won't be in place until after the Arsenal game.

Following the sacking Palace chairman Steve Parish told the club website: "It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made.

"Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status. That said, Patrick's impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues.
