Steven Gerrard highlights Rangers plan for Nathan Patterson as teen right back signs long-term deal

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed there is a plan in place for Nathan Patterson to continue his progress at the club after he signed a new long-term deal.

The 19-year-old has extended his stay at his boyhood club until the summer of 2024 and will continue to look to challenge James Tavernier at right back.

Gerrard and Rangers have high hopes for the teenager and that was made clear when they decided against bringing in replacements for Jon Flanagan and Matt Polster after the pair were allowed to leave the club.

Patterson is the latest Rangers academy star to sign new deals at the club after Kai Kennedy and Ciaran Dickson both signed extended deals in the last month.

And Gerrard told the official Rangers website: “We have monitored Nathan’s progress closely over the past 18 months. His attitude is second to none, and I am particularly pleased with his desire to learn from his team mates especially our captain, James Tavernier.

“Ross and I have discussed our plan with Nathan for the incoming 18 months and have made our expectations clear. Nathan is a strong example of our player pathway for those who are training with the first-team and in our Academy.”

Patterson has made six appearances for Rangers since making his debut in a Scottish Cup win over Stranraer last January, with the latest as a sub against Ross County on Saturday.
