Steven Gerrard has previously identified Arsenal's two key threats amid Aston Villa appointment

Steven Gerrard was appointed as Aston Villa's new head coach on Thursday morning.

Gerrard spent three-and-a-half years with Rangers before making the move to Villa Park, clinching the Scottish Premiership title last season and going unbeaten in the process.

Now, the former Liverpool captain will be plying his trade in the Premier League with Villa after the West Midlands club decided to sack Dean Smith following five consecutive Premier League losses.

The 41-year-old has previously praised a number of Arsenal players, including club-captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and left-back Kieran Tierney.

Speaking on BT Sport back in 2017, the former Reds midfielder said: "I really enjoyed the first goal tonight.

"The ball inside the ball from Olivier Ntcham, the cross across the box by Kieran Tierney and the finish.

"It was a wonderful team goal. I know Brendan [Rodgers] works on this kind of stuff on the training ground, so he'll be very happy with that."

The Englishman added: "Excellent left-back, attacking full-back. I'm sure a lot of sides are watching him."

Similarly, in March 2017, Gerrard heaped praise on Aubameyang, who was playing for Borussia Dortmund at the time, urging Liverpool to sign the Gabonese centre-forward.

"Yeah, but if he's in this type of form he'll alert a lot of clubs not just Liverpool", he told Gary Lineker when asked if the prolific frontman fitted the profile of what Liverpool needed.

"He attacks the frame all the time, and he gets tap-ins because of his movement."

The Gunners defeated Villa just over a fortnight ago, clinching a 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Aubameyang, Thomas Partey and Emile Smith Rowe.

The two sides will battle it out again in March, with Gerrard hoping to record his first win as a coach against the north Londoners.
