Steven Gerrard handed Rangers standards verdict as Scottish Cup exit sparks 'disappointing season' poser

Richard Foster claims Rangers dropped well below their usual standards after the Scottish Cup disappointment against St Johnstone.

The Rangers manager was left stunned as his sides were bundled out of the cup on a dramatic night at at Ibrox.

Gerrard’s men looked to have secured a spot in the last four when James Tavernier bagged a vital late header with four minutes of extra-time remaining.

However, Rangers failed to see it out and allowed Saints keeper Zander Clark to win a header from a Liam Craig corner in their box which let sub Chris Kane equalise.

Clark was the hero in the shoot-out as he saved Tavernier and Kemar Roofe's efforts in the penalty shoot-out saw to destroy their hopes of sealing a domestic Double.

Former Rangers and St Johnstone defender Foster felt that the champions had dropped off against the Perth Saints and sealed their Scottish Cup fate.

It was below their usual performance and St Johnstone made it difficult for them.

He told Sportscene: "Rangers had chances and Zander had some decent saves, and Morelos hit the post.

"They did enough to win the game but they didn’t do enough up top, and there will be huge disappointment at Ibrox."

When asked if the season would now be a disappointment in Govan after they failed to add to the Premiership title win, fellow pundit James McFadden pointed to Gerrard's reaction for Tavernier's opener.

McFadden said: "I think it’s clear. You can see how much they celebrated the goal.

"They thought they had won the game. They have won the league and they get all the praise for that, but they wanted to win that cup and get the double.

"I wouldn’t say it’s a disappointing season obviously because of how well they won the league but they will be disappointed they haven’t won the cup."
