Steven Gerrard gives update on future of £12m Liverpool winger wanted by Rangers, Aston Villa and Leeds United who flopped at Bristol City

Steven Gerrard says he expects Ryan Kent will remain at Liverpool for now.

The winger is in demand this summer - a far cry from 12 months ago when his loan at Bristol City ended in a whimper.

City were fined for not playing Kent enough after he failed to perform, and he subsequently went back out on loan to Rangers.

At Ibrox, playing under his former Liverpool youth coach Gerrard, Kent impressed and has now been linked with moves to Aston Villa and Leeds United.

The Reds' asking price is £12m, which probably prices both Leeds and the Gers out of the market if they want to sign Kent on a permanent deal.

However, there is the possibility of Kent going back out on loan - but if this happens, Gerrard is not expecting the player's future to be resolved any time soon.

Gerrard told  Sky Sports : "There’s always competition for top players.

"Yes we would like Ryan Kent back but the reality is he's Liverpool's player so we have to respect that.

"Jurgen Klopp, I'm sure, will want to take a look at Ryan so we’ll respect Liverpool’s decision on which direction they want to take on the situation but we are at the table.

"We love the player, we feel as if we did a good job with him for 12 months and feel there's more to come in the job we'd like to do with him.

"The reality it is there is competition and Liverpool still own the player so they’ve got the final say on him.

"We're progressing in terms of our targets and the squad is close to being finished - but we're not finished just yet."
