Steven Gerrard gives Gareth Bale and Thiago Alcantara transfer verdict amid Liverpool claim

Steven Gerrard has said Gareth Bale’s signing would represent a major coup for Tottenham Hotspur – but he is more excited about another Premier League arrival.

The Liverpool legend is looking forward to seeing Bale back in the top flight, as he edges closer to a Spurs loan from Real Madrid.

football.london understands Bale will sign a season-long loan with Tottenham with an option to keep the Welshman for longer.

It comes seven years after the forward left White Hart Lane to join Real in a then world-record move.

But as Bale is on the verge of a Spurs switch, champions Liverpool have completed a mega deal of their own.

Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara has made the switch to Anfield after bidding farewell to the Bundesliga champions.

And it is that deal that has given Gerrard “butterflies in my stomach”.

“I think it’s a fantastic coup for Tottenham,” Gerrard said at his pre-match press conference on Bale. “I think you’re talking about a world class individual but to be honest I am more excited about Thiago.

“He’s the one that’s got me butterflies in my stomach. My focus down there is Liverpool not Tottenham.

“But it’s a fantastic coup. Gareth Bale is world class and you don’t want to see players like that sitting on the bench, frustrated and not playing.

“We want to see these players live and playing again so I’m sure he will add an awful lot to the Premier League.

“But the butterflies in my stomach will be for Thiago – sorry about that.”
