Steven Gerrard given love for Leeds as Rangers boss Michael Beale predicts big managerial future

Michael Beale has backed Steven Gerrard to get back into management and shake off his Aston Villa agony to relaunch his career.

The former Rangers boss has been linked with the vacant Leeds United job after American Jesse Marsch was sacked by the Yorkshire club earlier this week. A poor set of results led to his sacking with his last game coming against Nottingham Forest where Leeds lost 1-0. The Liverpool legend has been linked with a number of jobs since being sacked by Villa in October last year, including the Poland national team after Czeslaw Michniewicz stepped down in December.

Rayo Vallecano head coach Andoni Iraola and Feyenoord's Arne Slot emerged as favourites for the Leeds job after another reported target, Carlos Corberan, signed a new contract with West Brom earlier this week. Iraola was refused permission to speak to the Premier League club, while Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has also been linked. Now former River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo is also one of the names in the mix, according to reports in Argentina.

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink backed Gerrard for the Leeds United job yesterday. Beale did not mention Leeds in his press conference but backed his former boss to get back into management sooner rather than later.

Beale said: "I haven’t spoken to Steven recently. He looks like he’s enjoying some time with the family. When you consider the amount of sacrifice he’s had over the years it’s probably the right thing to do. I think Steven is going to go on and become a real big success as a manager.

"Having spent time with him, I think there’s been some unfair things thrown at him. I worked underneath him, not alongside him. He was the boss. It worked really well for four years at two clubs. I expect Steven and his staff to go on and have a successful future. There’s a lot of speculation in the air but no-one will be more happier than me when Steven gets back in."
