Steven Gerrard fires Rangers warning as he hails stars for 'successful' pre-season

Steven Gerrard has declared his Rangers side ready for the challenge of the new campaign.

The Light Blues wrapped up their pre-season programme with a convincing 1-0 win at Ibrox over Championship side Derby County.

Niko Katic scored the only goal of a game Rangers dominated to make it 23 goals for and only one against in seven summer fixtures.

Rangers, who have been drawn at East Fife in the Betfred Cup, will now turn their attention towards trying to topple Celtic from the summit of Scottish football.

Gerrard takes his team to Kilmarnock on Sunday for the Premiership opener and said: “I’m very pleased and proud of the efforts of the players throughout pre-season.

“However, now it’s time to get themselves ready. They’ve got seven days to prepare domestically for a huge season.

“Pre-season has been successful. We’ve only conceded one goal and had some good tests here in Marseille, Blackburn and Derby.

“Derby were 90 minutes away from the Premier League and have millions of pounds worth of players all over the pitch.

“They played their strongest team today and are a week away from the start of their season, so no-one can say it’s because we are ahead of them from a fitness point of view.

“We’ve had really good, tough tests. Blackburn were fit and aggressive, but we should have beaten them. We were ahead of Marseille from a fitness point of view but their budget is bigger, their players earn hundreds of thousands more than mine.

“So credit to the players, they’ve had a really strong pre-season. But you know what you get for that - absolutely nothing. Now it’s time to re-set and go again next week.”

Derby keeper Kelle Roos kept his side in the game with a string of super stops as Swedish defender Filip Helander started his first game since his £3 million switch from Bologna.

Gerrard again rung the changes, rotating his squad as they prepare to fly to Luxembourg this week for the second leg of their Europa Lague qualifier against Progres Niederkorn.
