Steven Gerrard fires Rangers transfer warning as he gives update on Borna Barisic contract talks

Steven Gerrard has told rival clubs to forget about landing his star men – as none of them will be sold during the January transfer window.

The Rangers boss is looking to trim his squad and is set to let several fringe players leave this month.

But he is adamant there is a not for sale sign hanging over Ibrox when it comes to the key parts of his title challenging team.

Gerrard revealed contract talks have now kicked off with Roma target Borna Barisic, while transfer talk is heating up around the likes of Alfredo Morelos, James Tavernier, Connor Goldson and Glen Kamara.

Greg Docherty is on the verge of a deal at Sunderland, Jamie Murphy could head for Burton, and Glen Middleton is also set for a loan deal.

But Gerrard revealed there’s been no approaches for his main men and any club making a move would be wasting their time.

The Gers gaffer said: “We haven’t had a bid in black and white for any of our players so far in the window.

“Will that happen from now until the end? Possibly, I don’t know, I wouldn’t like to predict it.

“We don’t want any of our best players to go.

“There will be players around the squad who will go out on loan, any day now. That could happen today, it could happen next Monday. We’ll see.

“But in terms of selling any of our assets, any of our top players, that won’t be happening.

“The important thing is we’re all on the same page. Dave King, the board, Stewart Robertson, Ross Wilson, myself, my staff, even the players themselves — we’re all on the same page in terms of where we’re trying to take this and what we want.

“It doesn’t make any sense at all for anyone connected with Rangers if we’re to cash in one of our assets right now.

“Will it happen in the future? Possibly.

“We all understand the situation and what happens. Sometimes bids can’t be turned down. I respect and understand that.

“But, it would be a huge, huge mistake if we did that now — or in the next couple of weeks.”

Rangers have got the ball rolling on Barisic’s bumper new deal and Gerrard is confident the in-form full back is content at Ibrox.

He said: “We’ve opened up contract negotiations with Borna and his representatives.

“That’s bubbling away and I think that shows our intent and how much we want to keep the player.

“I think the player’s really happy here.”

Youngster Middleton’s loan chances have been set back by a minor injury, with St Mirren and Hamilton sniffing for a deal, but Gerrard expects Docherty and Murphy to exit in the next few days.

He said: “It’s getting closer and closer with Docherty and I predict something could happen in the coming days.

“With Jamie, it’s a similar situation to Docherty’s, but I predict that they will go out, hopefully in a couple of days so they can get playing as quick as possible.

“In an ideal scenario, I want to see them playing competitive football in the coming days rather than weeks.”

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson confirmed he’s in the hunt for midfielder Docherty.

He said: “Greg is a player we have looked at. We have had initial chats with Rangers and there are a number of those discussions going on.”

Gerrard confirmed skipper Tavernier is facing a lay-off of a few weeks, as revealed in yesterday’s Record Sport, but he insisted the full back’s appendix problem could have been far worse.

He said: “I know there were some rumours circulating that he was going to be out for six weeks to a month – they aren’t true.

“Thankfully we’ve got one of the best docs in the business and sent him to a specialist pretty early and we got to the problem straight away.

“These situations can be worse. I think they can be up to six weeks or a couple of months if there are complications or the appendix bursts. But that wasn’t the case.

“We’ve managed to get to the situation really early. In saying that, no-one wants to lose their captain for one game, never mind a couple.”

Gerrard was planning to make changes for the Scottish Cup clash with Stranraer regardless but he will also be without crocked Greg Stewart.

The Ibrox boss said: “This is a competition we want to win. We realistically have two pieces of silverware left to win this season. It’s three if you count the Europa League, but we all know and respect where we are in terms of that competition.

“So no-one in my squad will treat either Stranraer or the Scottish Cup with disrespect, that’s for sure.”
