Steven Gerrard fires Rangers message to Jordan Jones as Ibrox boss underlines tough demands

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told winger Jordan Jones to repeat the level of performance he displayed against Motherwell if he wants to remain in his first XI.

The Northern Ireland wide man notched a sensational second goal to double his side's advantage in Sunday's 5-1 Premiership win at Fir Park after being drafted into the team by Gerrard.

It looked like Jones could have been moved on in the summer transfer window but he reminded fans what he is capable of in the game against the Steelmen.

And as long as he keeps putting in similar showings, Gerrard reckons there is a place for him in his Rangers side.

He told Sky Sports: "I thought he was excellent. I thought he was a threat throughout, he played to his strengths, he brought his attributes to the game.

"The message is pretty clear to JJ - he shows that type of level, that's Jordan Jones.

"I won't settle for anything less than the real Jordan Jones.

"He showed it today, he showed it in a cameo on Thursday night and if he keeps doing it, he'll keep getting appearances for Rangers."

The Light Blues' attention now turns to an all-or-nothing Europa League playoff against Galatasaray.

The Istanbul club boast the likes of Colombia legend Radamel Falcao among their ranks and Gerrard is under no illusions as to how tough the tie will be, even if the draw did spare them a trip to Turkey.

But some of Rangers' best performances under the Liverpool legend have been in Europe and he's ready for the huge clash.

"The most pleasing thing was it was on the back of a tough night on Thursday. Yes, we won the game 4-0, but it certainly wasn't a 4-0 game.

"We've had to really empty the tank so to get that level of performance on the back of that I'm very pleased.

"Now we've got a little more time, we've got a day off tomorrow to recover and then we'll start our preparations on Tuesday for Galatasaray. I'm sure they're going to be favourites, they're a massive team, a Champions League team, world-class footballers.

"But we'll go and give it our best shot, we'll leave it out there, give it everything we've got and see where it takes us."
