Steven Gerrard fights to keep Rangers emotions in check as 'bubbling' boss declares he's hungry for more

Steven Gerrard was forced to keep his emotions in check as Rangers moved to within an inch of the Scottish Premiership title.

The Ibrox gaffer said he was 'bubbling' after a 3-0 victory over St Mirren put the champagne on ice.

They'll be champions if Celtic slip up at Tannadice today, with Gerrard's team now just a point away from a first major trophy in a decade.

Afterwards, the players celebrated at the Ibrox gates with hundreds of supporters who'd gathered outside the stadium.

And the manager admitted it's now difficult to contain his excitement, with him and his players on the verge of securing legendary status at the club.

Gerrard said: “We're now millimetres away from being champions but we'll try to stay humble.

“It's tough because we're so close. And it's been a long journey over the three years.

“There have been some highs and lows in there. But I've just walked into a happy dressing-room, because we're so close now.

“When I turned up at the stadium today, it was emotional. You could see on the fans’ faces what it meant.

“How are my emotions right now? Bubbling. I'm obviously really happy and proud.

“I can relate to these emotions that I've had as a player.

“At the same time I want to stay controlled because it's not confirmed as of yet.

“But I think everyone knows it's' 99.99 per cent done.

“Because of what's going on in the world right now, it's difficult to get carried away and celebrate for real if you like.

“I'm trying to keep a lid on things.”

That will be especially hard for the fans who broke Covid lockdown rules to gather at Ibrox and salute their heroes.

Gerrard's car was mobbed by supporters on his way to the ground, with flares and fireworks going off around him.

He says he's well aware of people's safety being the number one priority.

But at the same time, he refused to condone Rangers die-hards who've been through the most turbulent period in the club's history.

Gerrard said: “I’ve got to get my words right here - we are still experiencing and are involved in a pandemic.

“So it’s important that fans try to stay safe.

“That’s the priority – fans’ safety and people’s safety. I totally understand that.

“But at the same time, if you’ve got anything inside your heart, you will understand what the fans have been through.

“You can totally understand what’s gone on outside this stadium.

“It’s my job to try and control that and safety is paramount at the moment.

“But it’s tough because it has been an emotional three years for me.

“The fans have been here much longer than that, they've been through a lot in 10 years. So you can certainly understand it.

“We heard the rumours about how it could be when we turned up at the stadium today. That can take you to an emotional place, a real high.

“Some of my new players haven’t seen the supporters yet, so it was a big eye-opener for them.

“But I had a good idea what it would be like. The day I turned up here on May 4, 2018, I didn’t expect 8000 fans who had to be brought inside for safety reasons.

“So I had an idea that once we got that first big success together - which was always going to be the hardest - what the reaction would be like.

“During a pandemic, you think maybe it wouldn’t be like it was today.

“But what you saw today is 10 years of what these supporters have been through.

“I’m delighted for them and really proud of the players’ efforts because they have been outstanding.

“From a league point of view, they have been close to perfect.”

The league flag could be sealed tomorrow if Celtic don't beat Dundee United.

But Gerrard revealed he and his Rangers players will be having LUNCH together while the action unfolds on Tayside.

He said: “We'll come in for a recovery session and have lunch together on Sunday.

“I'm sure the game will be on in the background. I'm not going to lie, that's normal.

“We'll see what happens tomorrow. But the priority is going to be getting the players ready physically and mentally for Thursday night in the Europa League against Slavia Prague.

“That's going to be a real tough challenge, probably our most difficult of the season so far.”

Gerrard also insisted he's "hungry for more" after realising from the high vantage point of the Ibrox stands his job isn't done yet.

Players rushed to see the supporters at full-time (PA)

He told the club's official website: "I always said the first one would be the hardest and we're obviously millimetres away from achieving that.

"But I don't know, I got a feeling upstairs today I want more, I'm hungry for more and I hope my players share that. If they do it's exciting times to be a
fan.

"For me the priority is to really let this sink in, get it officially done and realise the monumental achievement that it is. But that's got to make you hungry for more.

"For me, I'm already thinking about what's next and I want more. That's my drive every single day when I come to work.

"Since I was a young lad I just want success and I want to win, I want to win football matches and I want to have moments like that in the dressing room.

"That's what it is all about."
