Steven Gerrard feels John Kennedy's Rangers Five 'pain' as he raises Celtic Dubai trip to highlight SFA 'inconsistencies'

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard agrees with John Kennedy over "inconsistencies" with how the SFA handle cases including Celtic's trip to Dubai.

It comes after the interim Parkhead boss was irked by comments he perceived as the Ibrox manager wanting Nathan Patterson to get off lightly due to his burgeoning potential.

The rising star and four team-mates were hit with six-game bans but Rangers lodged an appeal and they will have their case heard on April 20 - three days after the rivals meet in their crunch Scottish Cup fourth roundshowdown.

Kennedy has also been left smarting by the "delay" over the appeal date as he called for the SFA to offer clarity amid the waiting game.

And Gerrard agrees with his counterpart and believes it's high time the governing body offered clearer guidelines.

Speaking at his Friday press conference, the Ibrox manager said: "We don't control when the hearings are held, I agree with John on the inconsistencies from the SFA. I feel his pain, if I was John I’d be frustrated if good players were available to play against my team.

"We were really strong with our punishments for the lads. I don't see any consistency with the outcome of the bans compared to previous situations, in Dubai social distancing rules were clearly broken and nothing was done. It seems as if the SFA are guessing with punishments."

It comes after Celtic caretaker Kennedy called for clarity from the SFA over the punishment process for players who breach strict Covid rules.

He said: “Steven’s got his reasons to do that and say it but our players are talented.

“We paid money for them and have high hopes for them.

“Look at the Bolingoli situation. Yes, he broke the law and he was harshly punished for it and rightly so.

“We’re not defending that but it was a massive setback in terms of his career at Celtic.

“That’s the punishment for stepping out of one.

“You can’t do it. We were then running behind and we had to fit those matches in somewhere else while losing a player who had been important to us.

“It wasn’t a good situation and there was a lot of pressure on us because of it as we were then paying catch up.

“We can’t use that as an excuse because Bolingoli put us in that position and we had to deal with it and move on.

“But we need to make sure that there is consistency across the board.

“It was made very clear to our players that these are the situations that you can’t get involved in.

“One, because you’ll be punished for it, but it also brings extra pressure and scrutiny on the club. These players have been caught breaking the law themselves.

“Regardless of how talented or valuable the player may be, there comes a punishment when you step out of line. We’ve been dealt with harshly in the past and had to accept that.

“This is only my opinion and I’m not just saying this because it’s Rangers.

“Aberdeen were dealt with in the same manner as ourselves when their players were involved in their situation.

“Our players are talented. They’ve been punished. It’s the same difference.

“It should be very clear in terms of how you deal with situations like this.

“Regardless of the player – how talented, how valuable he is – there comes a punishment when you step out of line in these situations.

“We’ve been dealt with harshly in the past and had to accept it and we have to wait and see what comes Rangers’ way.”
