Steven Gerrard explains Nnamdi Ofoborh's Rangers absence as heart issue flagged up in tests

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed Nnamdi Ofoborh has to see a heart specialist after issues were flagged up in his pre-season tests.

The midfielder joined from Bournemouth but is yet to pull on a blue shirt and Gerrard admits it's likely to be a while before he does get into action at Ibrox.

Ofoborh joined up on the first day of pre-season with the rest of the squad and Gerrard explained that there was a worry with his ECG tests that has led to him being pulled out of action.

He has been kept with the Rangers squad but he won't play until the issue is sorted out and his manager has urged him to keep his head up and stay optimistic.

He told RangersTV: "I don't think you'll see him in the short term either. Unfortunately, something has flagged up on his ECG which is his heart test.

"We've got top medical people at the club and we check all the players thoroughly when they arrive and unfortunately there's been a bit of a red flag with a heart issue.

"He's going to see some specialists in the coming weeks and we need to do more checks and tests before we move forward which is disappointing and frustrating.

"We'll have to manage and cope.

"The important thing is the players health which we'll focus on first and foremost. Of course it's disappointing for the player but I spoke to him yesterday and told him to keep smiling and be patient and we'll do everything we can to support him and get him in front of the right people with the right support and hopefully he'll be back before not too long."
