Steven Gerrard encouraged by Standard Liege v Rangers fan development with 3700 to attend match

Steven Gerrard says he welcomes news that more than 3700 supporters will attend Rangers' Europa League match against Standard Liege.

The Belgian side were granted permission to allow fans into the Stade Maurice Dufrasne for Thursday evening's group stage clash.

Gerrard says he's encouraged by the development, and hopes we can follow suit before too long, when it's safe to do so, in Scotland.

He said: "We certainly welcome supporters into stadiums. We welcome atmospheres to play in. Obviously it's only a certain percentage but it's a move closer to where we all want to be, which is back to full capacity and really exciting atmospheres to test ourselves in and work under.

"Hopefully back domestically we can get the ball rolling and get fans back in the stadiums when it's safe to do so.

"It's very welcome from myself and the players, and we're looking forward to a different atmosphere tomorrow to what we've been playing under."

Standard issued a statement on Thursday confirming news of their fan go-ahead.

They said: "Following a consultation between the City of Liege and our club, the local authorities authorise the presence of a restricted audience limited to 3750 people during our European meeting this Thursday against the Scots of Rangers FC.

"In view of the latest measures taken at the catering level, in addition to the ban on entering the stadium with drinks and the closing of the bars, we can no longer activate the drink order service in the stands, from this Thursday.

"This measure, combined with the smoking ban, thus enables supporters present to comply with the obligation to wear a mouth mask at all times during the entire period of presence in the stadium."
