Steven Gerrard dismisses 'psychological advantage' talk as Rangers bid to go nine clear of Celtic

Steven Gerrard has dismissed any talk that Rangers could gain a "psychological advantage" over Celtic by going nine points clear on Sunday.

The league leaders have the chance to open up a nine point gap over their Old Firm rivals when they face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday. Celtic are in Scottish Cup semi-final action against Aberdeen on the same day, and will end the weekend with two matches in hand.

Gerrard feels it's far to early to be paying too much attention to the league table, and says they're only focused on themselves with such a busy run of fixtures coming up.

He said: "I don't think we're too concerned with psychological advantages, and where the table's at.

"We're taking each game as it comes. There's three points available. We want the three points, we're hungry for the three points.

"I think it would be different if we had the opportunity to go there and be nine points clear with no games in hand.

"You're talking about Celtic here who are a good team, who are capable of going on big runs.

"We're still in October. It's very early days for us to be getting carried away, or ahead of ourselves. We've started the season very well. We're happy with where we are. The focus is very much on us and what we can do."

Gerrard says Rangers might need to switch things up, and add a bit of variety to their play, come Sunday lunchtime if they are to get all three points at Rugby Park.

He said: "First of all we need to see who's available today. First and foremost. Then we'll decide on a team capable of going there and getting the three important points that we need.

"When you're playing against a block you have to have variety in your play. I don't want to give too much away but it's important you move the ball quick and have variety in your play so you're not predictable and everything's in front of the Kille defence.

"We have to go over at times, we have to go round. You have to make sure when the opportunities come that you're really clinical and you execute. Killie are a team that are well drilled. They are organised and they don't give much away. I think the pitch helps them to play that way.

"We know it's a tricky game, a tough place and we know that our record could and should be better at Rugby Park. But it's another fresh game. It's an opportunity to go there and try and put in a good performance. We couldn't be in a better place because our form is good, people are fresh and people are ready."
