Steven Gerrard didn’t bottle Celtic clash but Rangers boss did get his tactics wrong – The Barry Ferguson podcast

The first Fergie Time Podcast is live and you can hear Barry Ferguson as you’ve never heard him before.

From today and every Monday, the legendary Rangers and Scotland captain is joined by the Daily Record’s chief football writer Keith Jackson as they talk all things Scottish football.

On this episode, former Celtic goal machine Scott McDonald joins Barry and Keith as they discuss the Hoops’ win over Rangers at Ibrox and all the fallout.

Steven Gerrard has been accused of setting his team up to combat Celtic rather than stick with the formula that earned them two wins over their rivals at Ibrox as well as another strong start to the season in Europe.

But Barry rejected the suggestion the Rangers boss bottled it – insisting he just got his team selection wrong.

He said: “Steven Gerrard is a clever guy.

“I don’t think he bottled it. I just think he got the personnel wrong and I think he’s the type of manager who will go away and study that. In his interview after the game he took part of the blame. That’s what I like. I don’t like a manager who puts it just on the players.

“At the end of the day it’s the manager who picks the 11 who go out.

“I’ve got to be honest, I was surprised by his team selection. I was surprised he never went with a wide man.

“I thought Arfield would have played in a wider area and I like Scotty Arfield coming in off either flank, whether it’s the left or the right.

“But I thought he would have gone with Sheyi Ojo or Jordan Jones who made a big impact on Thursday night in the European game.

“Celtic were the better team on the day. Too many Rangers players had off days.”

Former Celtic striker Scott said: "You’ve got to look at how many guys were making their Old Firm debuts. That was huge.

“I think if you’re a Rangers fan, a Rangers player or the Rangers manager today you’ll be hugely disappointed.

“What really surprised me from the word go was how they stepped off Celtic. They never went and high pressed them - and they were at home at Ibrox.

“Celtic dominated possession without causing too many problems for Rangers but a lot of the game was played in the Rangers half. You would fully expect Rangers to come at you but they didn’t do that."

In an hour-long podcast the guys also discussed the problems enveloping Craig Levein at Hearts and Paul Heckingbottom at Hibs.

Finally, they look ahead to the weekend’s crucial double-header for Steve Clarke’s squad as Scotland prepare to take on Russia and Belgium in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
