Steven Gerrard details Harry Kane thinking amid Manchester United transfer interest

Steven Gerrard has compared questions he asked himself about his future to those likely going through Harry Kane's mind amid interest from Manchester United.

Kane took his England goalscoring tally to 55 on Sunday evening, netting the opener in a 2-0 win over Ukraine at Wembley. The 29-year-old became his country's all-time leading scorer against Italy on Thursday, less than two months after doing to same at club level for Tottenham.

However a failure to bring any major trophies to North London has forced the striker to consider his future, and United hope they can convince him Old Trafford is the place to win silverware. Erik ten Hag will prioritise a world-class goalscorer this summer as he builds a team fit to challenge for Premier League and European titles.

“Listen, I don’t want to open a can of worms, he’s got a big decision to make career-wise," Gerrard told Channel 4 after England beat Ukraine 2-0 on Sunday. "I’ve been there myself where you’re thinking is my team good enough to get me the medals? Am I going to get out of my career what I want to get?

“It’s different for me because I grew up a Liverpool fan from the city, all my family were Liverpool fans, and I knew winning one trophy more with Liverpool would have meant a lot more to me than being anywhere else.

“He’s not from Tottenham, he’s not been through Tottenham all the time, he’s got a big decision to make. I can’t give him any advice on that but I bet you every single day of his life now moving forward it’s gonna be on his mind.”

Kane has made no secret of his desire to win major trophies, an admission often caveated by adding that he wants to do so at Tottenham. But with Antonio Conte's side out of every cup competition and with no chance of winning the Premier League, such a dream feels a long way off.

Conte labelled his players 'selfish' after throwing away a two-goal lead against Southampton before the international break and the Italian is almost certain to leave the club when his contract expires this summer, should he make it that far. That leaves Spurs back at square one and Kane still without a trophy - something Joe Cole described as a 'travesty'.

"Stevie won loads of trophies in his career, Harry Kane’s nearly 30 and he’s not lifted silverware so for a player of his ability that will be a travesty," Cole added. "He’s got a big decision to make.

"I’m sure it’s not going to be something he’s thinking about now, because it’s all England now, but come tomorrow morning he’s back with his Tottenham head on and they have a big decision.

"I just think it would be a travesty if he finishes his career without winning a trophy because he’s one of the all-time greats in this country, that’s for sure."
