Steven Gerrard Derby latest as Rams chief delivers two-word response to claim

Derby County owner Mel Morris has rubbished claims he had approached Steven Gerrard over the possibility of replacing Frank Lampard as boss at Pride Park.

The Rangers manager was reportedly top of the Rams' list of potential replacements for Lampard who is set for a stunning return to Chelsea.

Gerrard responded to the reports at the Ibrox club's summer training camp in Portugal earlier this week, saying he was focused only on the job at hand with Rangers.

He said: "I'm very happy. It's a privilege to be the Rangers manager and my focus is on the coming season.

"It's very similar to when there is noise around players. I ask them to stay focused on the job and that's what I'll continue to do.

"There's nothing really to add to it."

Now Morris has broken his silence on the matter - and he claims there had been no approach to Gerrard which had been reported by the Times last week.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, he said the claims are “absolute rubbish”.

The Times report claimed Gerrard had rejected an approach from Derby as the Championship club make contingency plans with Lampard expected to be confirmed as Maurizio Sarri's replacement as Chelsea boss soon.

The Rams gave permission to Lampard to speak with his former club on Tuesday.

Gerrard, however, insisted he is happy at Rangers and insisted he felt "very lucky" to manager "one of the biggest football clubs you can manage".

He said: "I was very lucky and appreciative of the opportunity I got 12 months ago.

"I came in very focused in season one. Nothing has changed in my mind.

"I'm delighted to be the Rangers manager, I'm managing one of the biggest football clubs you can manage so nothing has changed in terms of my focus."
