Steven Gerrard could deal transfer blow to Liverpool with new Aston Villa signing

The January transfer window is beginning to ramp up - and one of the latest rumours concerns a player linked with Liverpool.

Throughout last summer the Reds were heavily tipped to make a move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, who was also said to be attracting interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

However, according to a fresh report, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could be about to hand his boyhood club a blow in the transfer market.

As claimed by Sky Sports , Aston Villa have registered an interest in signing Bissouma this month.

Bissouma is currently away on international duty with Mali for the Africa Cup of Nations, but that hasn’t stopped transfer interest surfacing.

The 25-year-old has 18 months left on his contract at Brighton, who are expected to be unwilling to part with Bissouma this month.

Seagulls boss Graham Potter has hinted that he could be forced to sell players like his star man but insisted that he is determined to keep them at the Amex Stadium.

"I am really happy with the group we have got. I think it can get better, our team and our group," Potter told Sussex Live .

"I don't think we have reached the maximum in terms of how we are performing, so I am excited to see that continue to develop.

"You never know what the window brings in terms of whether anything comes from the outside, which you have to factor into, we are open to that.

"We are not a selling club at all, we don't have to sell anybody. But you never know in this world so you have to be a little bit aware of that."
