Steven Gerrard consoles tearful Rangers star Ryan Jack as Betfred Cup final highlights unbreakable bond

Steven Gerrard consoled a distraught Ryan Jack after Rangers agonisingly lost the Betfred Cup final to Celtic.

The Gers dominated the game but Neil Lennon 's side scored with their only shot on target to seal their 10th domestic trophy in a row.

After the final whistle Jack, who had shaken off a first half knee injury to complete the 90 minutes, broke down in tears.

The former Aberdeen midfielder was consoled by his manager, who could be seen offering words of encouragement to Jack.

Gerrard has repeatedly praised the Scotland international's performances this season and the bond between the two is clear.

The Liverpool legend watched his side take 16 shots without scoring, with Alfredo Morelos blowing a golden chance from the penalty spot shortly after Christopher Jullien had given Celtic the lead.

Gerrard said after the match: "I thought we were outstanding in terms of our performance. Everything we asked of the players today, in terms of how we approach it and what we wanted from them, to a man I can’t be much prouder of them.

“But finals are normally decided on big moments and the big moments haven’t gone in our favour today.

“We conceded from a set piece which we shouldn’t have given away, there was no panic. Once you concede it, you have to defend it better.

"There were three Celtic players standing in offside positions but unfortunately we play in a country where there is no VAR.

“I think it (VAR) has taken something away from the game, so I’d be a liar if I said I’m 100 percent in favour of it.

“But one thing I do know is that the officials up here do need some support and help. Because there are too many things, not just for our club but across the board, that they maybe miss and need a bit of support on.

“I’m not the type of person who blames or look for excuses.

“The big moments have gone against us today, we are all responsible for that.

"The feeling is pretty similar to being a player. I’m gutted for the players because a couple of minutes have decided the cup final. I don’t think they could have given me any more or themselves any more.

"I’m gutted for them more, but it is what it is. We need to just take that one on the chin.

“I think we threw everything at it but looking over it, we haven’t grabbed the big moments. One was the penalty, obviously, but we created at least five or six other decent opportunities. You’ve got to take them if you want to win cup finals.

“We’ve got a huge game on Thursday and no better game to bounce back. I’ll stay with these players. On the evidence of what I’ve seen today, performance-wise, I’m staying right behind them. I’m right in it.

“On the evidence of today, we might have to suffer a little bit, of course. We have to soak it up, remember it and be ready to go and give ourselves another opportunity and that type of performance will get us where we want to get to."
