Steven Gerrard calls for Liverpool to start working on a Jurgen Klopp statue imminently

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool should put up a statue of Jurgen Klopp in light of his past and imminent achievements as Reds boss.

The German delivered a sixth Champions League title last season and has led the Anfield club to a commanding 25-point lead and the brink of the Premier League title this campaign.

The Reds are on course to break a number of records during the run-in, including the highest number of points achieved in a season and the largest title-winning margin.

Liverpool have not won a league title for 30 years and the barren run coincided with club icon Gerrard's time as a player.

With years of frustration about to be put to bed with just one or two wins needed to secure the title, Gerrard believes Klopp can be placed in an elite group of Liverpool managers alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

“Knowing Jurgen, he won’t want to be put in that bracket,” Gerrard told The Athletic . “I know what he’s like, he’s humble and respectful.

"When you look at the scale of the job he’s done, for sure he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those iconic managers.

“What you need to take into consideration is that when Jurgen took over Liverpool they weren’t close to being the best team in the country, they weren’t even in the top four.

“To come to Liverpool when he did, get to the amount of finals that he has, deliver the sixth European Cup and then deliver the first league title after 30 years…For me, someone like Jurgen should be rewarded now."

Liverpool renamed Anfield's Centenary Stand after Dalglish in 2017, while there are statues of Shankly and Paisley outside the ground.

And Gerrard insists Klopp's imminent achievement deserves a similar form of immortalisation.

The Rangers boss added: "It seems like in football we often wait until people get older before their achievements are fully recognised.

“But I know the owners of Liverpool won’t let that happen. When Jurgen delivers the league they should already be starting work on a statue of him.”
