Steven Gerrard brushes aside Celtic exit question as Rangers boss talks up his own trophy desire

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard insists he's fully focused on forging his own path to silverware despite rivals Celtic's shock Betfred Cup exit.

The Light Blues coasted into the quarter-finals with a 4-0 win at Falkirk but Neil Lennon's Hoops weren't so lucky as they crashed out at home to Ross County hours earlier.

That result arguably means the competition is Gerrard's best chance to date at winning his first trophy at Ibrox - but he's only concerned who remains in the cup.

And the Govan side will travel to Paisley in the quarter-finals to face St Mirren - who knocked out Aberdeen on Saturday evening - with victory spelling another trip to Hampden after going all the way to the final last time out.

Asked on Premier Sports if the Betfred Cup is an even bigger opportunity after the Parkhead club's shock exit, Gerrard said: "We focus on the next round.

It's about facing each challenge as it comes and we certainly focus on what happens in the Rangers camp.

"Our challenge is to get the boys recovered and ready for Europe in midweek and we're really looking forward to the next round in this cup.

"The challenge and the aim is to go all the way.

"Doesn't matter who is in the competition, who has been knocked out. It's about Rangers trying to compete for silverware year in, year out.

"That's what it's about."

Rangers cruised to victory with Jermain Defoe opening the scoring after just six minutes.

That was followed up with goals from defenders Calvin Bassey, Borna Barisic and James Tavernier and Gerrard was impressed with his team's professionalism.

He added: "Falkirk are in a good place, I think they'll go on and compete for the league so the environment and where they were at, it was always going to be a tricky tie.

"But I thought the lads showed great professionalism, their application was spot on and we got what we deserved.

"JD, typical JD. Fantastic movement on the shoulder, teriffic finish with the left foot and it was a moment of class to get us up and running.

"Second one, a set-piece, fantastic header by Cedric and then Calvin follows in for his first goal, he's delighted.

"Then the third one is obviously a moment of genius by Borna, that technique is very difficult to get up and down but he's proven he's done it before so hopefully there's many more of them to come.

"And then James shows what place he's in. He leads by example and he goes and finishes the game off with a terrific volley.

"Strong performance all round, good goals and we managed to get a few debuts in there as well."
