Steven Gerrard blasts Rangers vs Livingston referee as he reveals Andy Halliday nearly lost an EYE in freak accident

Raging Rangers manager Steven Gerrard laid into referee Euan Anderson for his performance at Ibrox where his side had a strong penalty claim and two goals were chopped off for offside.

The Ibrox men won a hard-fought match 1-0 thanks to a 59th minute Scott Arfield goal after they had found Livingston's tenacious rearguard a tough nut to crack.

But Gerrard reckons the scoreline would have had a considerably more comfortable sheen had the referee called some big decisions correctly.

He told Rangers TV: "It was an important win and I'm very pleased and proud of the boys. It wasn't an ideal situation for the players or the fans with the game getting moved the 24 hours.

"You see the wind and the rain and you see the pitch and obviously given we are not in our best form at the moment a win is very important.

"We've handled it really well with the professionalism and attitude and I thought at times you could see us creating a lot more. We deserved our victory.

"People will say we rode our luck at times with the one off the post and the McGregor save but for me Alfredo's goal is perfectly onside and the referee missed a blatant handball so we could have been out of sight before we had those moments."

He continued: "When you are not at your fluent best I think it's important that you continue to win football matches. I don't think we won ugly today but I think it was an ugly football match because of the conditions. At times we showed good quality and created a few good chances in the first half.

"Andy Halliday has had one tipped onto the bar, Steven Davis has had a good one and Buff could have scored. We are still creating chances so that's pleasing but we still need to be a bit more organised and difficult to play against out of possession, certainly when we are going into fixtures like Braga on Thursday night.

Andy Halliday was involved in a sickening collision with the advertising boards during the game and Gerrard revealed that the star was lucky not to be on the end of a career threatening eye injury.

He said: "Credit to him for carrying on. Most people would have gone off with that. Andy's attitude has been fantastic in the last two games so we are pleased with him.

"He's gone over the advertising boards and nearly lost an eye because the chair has gone into just above the eye. He's had stitches and gone back on so I'm really pleased with his bravery and his character."

Scott Arfield's winner was his fourth goal in the last three matches and the midfielder is the one Ibrox star who has looked close to his best in recent weeks.

And while Gerrard is delighted with the Canadian international he used his praise as a call to arms to his other experienced stars to help lead the Gers back to top form.

He said: "Delighted, Scott epitomises what we want as a staff out of possession. He shows grit and he shows fight. He's there for you and in possession he's always available and stands up to be counted at important times so we are extremely happy with Scott.

"We are looking for all those experienced leaders within the group to keep pushing towards top form. When we do, we will all be in a better place."
