Steven Gerrard blamed for costing 'world class' Brendan Rodgers a chance to manage Barcelona or Real Madrid

Former Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has claimed Steven Gerrard's ill-timed Liverpool title slip cost Brendan Rodgers a plum job with Barcelona or Real Madrid.

The Reds were in pole position for their first Premier League title in 24 years back in 2014 before the Anfield icon tumbled to allow Chelsea's Demba Ba to net the opener during a 2-0 win.

And Sherwood is adamant Rodgers would have earned the chance to test his coaching credentials in La Liga in the wake of ending Liverpool's long wait for glory.

Rodgers was sacked by the Reds in October 2015 after a up and down run before recovering with a trophy-laden stay with Celtic where he delivered consecutive Trebles.

But Sherwood, impressed by the Irishman's work with Leicester, reckons the multi-lingual 47-year-old would be a perfect option for a foreign post.

Sherwood told talkSPORT : "Outstanding Brendan Rodgers. No one gave him a chance but it looks like Leicester are going to finish in the Champions League spots.

“He’s a world class manager. He nearly won the league at Liverpool so they could have been champions then.

“If it wasn’t for the slip from Stevie Gerrard and the away game against Crystal Palace, he probably would have been managing Real Madrid or Barcelona now – he’s a Spanish speaking manager.”

Rodgers renewed acquaintances in Glasgow with his former captain when Gerrard landed the Rangers gig and the pair split their two derby clashes before the Foxes came calling.
