Steven Gerrard backs Bukayo Saka as Rangers boss sends message following England penalty miss

After watching his country agonisingly miss out on a first international trophy for 55 years, Steven Gerrard 's first reaction was to show his support for Bukayo Saka.

The Rangers boss was quick to show his support after the 19-year-old saw his crucial spot kick saved by Gianliugi Donnarumma.

The England winger missed their final penalty of a dramatic Euro2020 shoot-out at Wembley, meaning Italy triumphed on a night of high drama at Wembley.

Luke Shaw's put Gareth Southgate's team ahead inside two minutes - the fastest goal ever in a European Championship final.

Roberto Mancini's men struggled to break down an England team that looked determined to get the job done on home turf.

But it was a different game after half-time, with the Italians dominating possession and starting to find gaps against their tiring opponents.

It was no surprise when Leonardo Bonucci levelled from close range as England held on for extra-time.

Penalties seemed inevitable as the extra half-an-hour wore on, and England did indeed have to face another old foe in the form of a shoot-out.

It looked to be going well when Andrea Belotti saw his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford and Harry Maguire emphatically converted to put England 2-1 up.

But Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho - brought on specifically to step up - missed their next two as Italy scored, leaving Chelsea's Jorginho with the chance to win it.

Pickford kept England alive by brilliantly tipping the midfielder's effort onto the post., but Donnarumma was equal to Saka's to ensure heartache for the hosts.

A tearful Saka was consoled by his teammates, but there was also sympathy for him from Ibrox as Gerrard posted a picture of the Arsenal youngster on Instagram, captioned "So brave kid".
