Steven Gerrard backed to take 'huge' Newcastle United manager step

Ryan Taylor has urged Newcastle United to consider Steven Gerrard as Steve Bruce's replacement and believes it would be a 'huge step' for the Rangers boss.

The Magpies are still searching for a new manager following the departure of head coach Steve Bruce by 'mutual consent' last week.

Graeme Jones led the side to a draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday, and will remain in charge on an interim basis for the upcoming home fixture with Chelsea.

Gerrard is one of a host of names linked with the vacant hotseat at St James' Park, with Lucien Favre and Paulo Fonseca currently considered the favourites among the bookmakers.

The 41-year-old guided Rangers to the title last season with an unbeaten league campaign to deny rivals Celtic a tenth crown in a row.

Magpies cult hero Taylor believes the 'passion' of Gerrard's upbringing on Merseyside will help him connect with the Toon Army, and reckons the former midfielder's previous Premier League experience makes him an ideal candidate to lead the new era at Newcastle.

He told Sky Sports: "I would 100% stick with an English manager, someone who knows the Premier League, knows the players, and someone with a big name.

"But I would love to see someone like Steven Gerrard in charge of Newcastle. It's so passionate up there and with coming from this city, he'll know what passion is all about.

"He plays football the right way, he knows who good players are, and I think he's done an unbelievable job at Rangers.

"If he was linked with the club and the club were interested, then obviously it's such a huge step for him with what they have planned for the future."
