Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso respond to Thiago Alcantara over Liverpool midfield claim

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says it would have "been a pleasure" to play alongside star midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

Thiago took part in a Q&A session with Liverpool fans recently and selected two former Reds in Gerrard and Xabi Alonso as his ideal partners to play with in the middle of the park.

Both Gerrard and Alonso lit up games during their time at Anfield - albeit for varying lengths - and would have made a formidable trio in the engine room alongside Thiago.

The Spain international has recovered from an impact knee injury, suffered back in October, and is set to help the Reds on their path to glory this term.

As well as fielding questions on his dream five-a-side team, his favourite dish he’s tried since arriving in Liverpool and his favourite walking spots around the city, he was also asked about his ideal midfield trio.

Having opted to select friends and family in his five-a-side team, he took a different approach with that question and selected the two Reds heroes.

Thiago said: “I have already played with Xabi Alonso, so I can tick that and say I would play with him. And, why not with Steven Gerrard? He’s a legendary midfielder, for sure.”

“If I played alongside him it would be a way for me to learn more about football, for sure.”

Gerrard responded on Instagram and commented on the video posted by the official Liverpool account.

“That would have been a pleasure trust me,” he wrote.

Alonso followed Gerrard by responding with: “I can see that midfield,” and a series of muscle emojis.

Thiago continued by heaping praise on Gerrard, calling the former Champions League-winner a legendary figure.

“I have massive respect for the story of Steven Gerrard at this club. He changed the club as well,” he added.

“I look forward to meeting him. Steven Gerrard is a legend. If I had played alongside him, it would have been a way to learn more football.”
