Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish hail Liverpool as 2000 fans gather for Anfield party

Liverpool are English champions for the first time since 1990 thanks to Chelsea's 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.

The result at Stamford Bridge means Liverpool have an unassailable 23-point lead over City with seven games left.

After City lost, around 2000 Liverpool fans gathered outside Anfield to celebrate their title victory, waving flags and setting off flares.

Scotland, Celtic and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, manager of the 1989-90 title-winning side at Anfield, heaped praise on the Reds' German boss Juergen Klopp.

He said: "Juergen has been fantastic and epitomises everything Liverpool Football Club stands for.

"And it's not just a one-off, last year they came within a point of it and this year they have only lost once.

"Onwards and upwards, I think they have a lot more happy days to look forward to now."

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard – an iconic former Liverpool captain – posted in Instagram: "Congratulations to all @liverpoolfc on winning the premier league . Incredible achievement from a fantastic squad of top players.

"Lead by a world class manager and coaching team also a special mention for the backing from FSG. And lastly and most importantly the fans who have waited 30 years. Let the party begin."

Klopp spoke of his pleasure of being the club's manager and was full of praise for his players.

The German told Sky Sports News: "I have no words, it's unbelievable. It's much more than I ever thought would be possible, becoming champion with this club is absolutely incredible."

He added: "It was really tense, the 95 or 100 minutes of the City game, as you can imagine. I didn't want to be involved really but obviously as you're watching you are involved.

"It was quite intense. But it was an incredible achievement of my players, what they did over the last two or three years is exceptional and a huge joy for me to coach them."
