Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson send Liverpool captain message to Trent Alexander-Arnold

Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson have both taken to social media to congratulate Trent Alexander-Arnold on captaining Liverpool for the first time last night.

It was a landmark moment in the Liverpool Academy graduate's career on what was his 147th senior appearance for the club.

The full-back was making his first start for the Reds since picking up an injury against Manchester City back in November and was handed the armband by Jurgen Klopp.

The 22-year-old captained the Reds for the opening 61 minutes at the MCH Arena before handing the armband over to Jordan Henderson.

Reacting to the honour on social media, Alexander-Anrold wrote on Instagram: “Dreams to reality.”

Henderson then wrote in response: “Congratulations mate! Unbelievable,” followed by a red heart and a clapping emoji.

While Gerrard simply posted a raising hands emoji and a OK hand emoji in response to the England international’s post.

Speaking after the game, Alexander-Arnold opened up on how he had fulfilled another lifelong ambition by captaining his boyhood club for the first time.

“An extremely proud moment for me and the people who have helped me do that," he told liverpoolfc.com.

“You've obviously got to give thanks to the manager and the staff who chose me to captain the team tonight.

“It was a really proud night for me on a personal note. I think I'll look back on tonight with fond memories as being captain for the first time.”

Before adding: “Obviously it's always been a dream, it's always special to play on Champions League nights.

“To lead the team out was incredibly proud, it was something that was different, new to me. It was special, it felt special out there.”
