Steven Gerrard admits Rangers were lucky as he insists St Johnstone should have had TWO penalties

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard admits his side were lucky not to concede two penalties at St Johnstone as he put all his focus on the Scottish Cup.

The visitors made a raft of changes at McDiarmid Park and were held to a 1-1 draw thanks to Liam Craig's late spot kick.

St Johnstone were fuming that a previous award was overturned in bizarre circumstances and the Ibrox boss has no problem admitting his team got lucky.

Gerrard told Rangers TV: "We'll take the point and we'll move.

"Coming here tonight you could tell clearly with my decisions before the game, during the game and at the very end, the game was all about the weekend.

"I wanted to give people an opportunity tonight and we nearly took maximum points by not playing well.

"We've got no complains in terms of the result, it's shame we didn't see the game out because I think we made some poor decisions in the final moments of the game.

"All-in-all we take the point and move on, it was a penalty and we're probably lucky not to concede another.

"I think probably our goalkeeper has been a little bit busier then theirs so we've got no complaints."

Scott Wright impressed and scored a fine goal to bag his first Rangers goal.

And the former Aberdeen man is now in contention for the weekend game that his manager had always seen as the priority.

Gerrard said: "The main positive tonight was about getting himself some minutes and up to speed so he's ready for the weekend (and) giving some players around the squad opportunities so they're ready if called upon.

"Scott Wright has done everything he needs to do since he's come in the door, he scored tonight and showed flashes throughout his performance.

"But we've been talking about him getting numbers in his game and he's got one.

"It should have been the winner, if we'd been better in our game management and seeing the game out.

"So it's disappointing we haven't taken three points but overall we've got no complaints with the result.

"Every decision I've made since Celtic, even subs tonight, I made for the weekend rather than what the the game needed tonight.

"My team selection was more about what the weekend needed rather than tonight.

"So I'm content, I'm satisfied, we've got everyone fresh and ready for the weekend and that was always the priority.

"As soon as Celtic finished I was more interested in St Johnstone at the weekend than tonight.

"It was about just dealing with tonight."
