Steven Gerrard admits Rangers ruthless concern but hails 'incredible' football despite Motherwell draw

Steven Gerrard bemoaned Rangers' inability to kill off Motherwell as he expressed his frustration that players haven't learned their lesson.

Rangers went ahead in the first-half when Fashion Sakala netted the opener but they failed to capitalise on their dominance before Kaiyne Woolery equalised for Motherwell on 66 minutes.

Gerrard believes Rangers should have been out of sight but he was exasperated that they failed to find a second goal despite some 'incredible' build up.

"It's two points dropped," Gerrard admitted. "There is no getting away from that.

"We played some outstanding stuff from box to box. We got there on numerous occasions but our last pass, final cross wasn't there and we didn't take our chances.

"We've got ourselves to blame. When you don't get that second goal, you've got that chance to be vunerable at the back and we haven't defended that situation well at all.

"We've got ourselves to blame today.

"Nobody will remember that [the good play] because we're at Rangers. I thought Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara and Steven Davis played some incredible stuff.

"Our preparation to build attacks was up there with the best we've had but when you get past the box, you need someone to find those moments of quality.

"That was a 3 or 4 nil game today. But when you don't get the second goal, you leave yourself vulnerable at the back.

"We've had these lessons before and that's the concern. We give the players detail and the detail doesn't really change much.

"We have to take ownership of it. We should be three points clear at the top but it's only one."

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander was delighted with the performance of his players and felt they could have left with all three points.

He said: "We know Rangers have great quality and they are going to ask you a lot of questions.

“But we stood up to that even though we were disappointed at the goal because of the obvious offside.

“Our focus after that was excellent. We always carried a threat and we got a goal from that threat.

“It was tough and it was hostile. We had to play against many opponents today, but you saw our players.

“They were backing each other, supporting each other and we knew we had that support back in Motherwell.

“My players deserve immense credit for coming here on a massive day, going 1-0 down to the champions and coming back to earn something from the game.

"Even though they did create pressure points I thought there was some great defensive work and what pleases me most was we always carried a threat, we could have scored before they did, we should have had a penalty in the first and we scored a goal of great quality, pass and move then finish.

“It was a deserved point at least. But we have to put it to bed and go next week.”
