Steven Gerrard admits Rangers Champions League exit could force player sales as he insists 'I'm not naive'

Steven Gerrard has admitted that Rangers may have to 'recycle' players if the right bids land this summer - conceding that their Champions League exit could impact his transfer plans.

Gerrard's side went crashing out of Europe's premier club competition at the hands of Malmo, with the Swedish champions beating them home and away to consign them to the Europa League.

It means they will miss out on the potential £40m payday that would have come with qualifying for the Champions League.

Gerrard was quizzed at his press conference about the impact it would have on their ability to hold onto key players, following the news that Porto's interest in Alfredo Morelos has re-emerged.

And while he was insistent the club won't be going out of their way to sell players as a result, he did admit that some 'recycling' may have to take place if the right offers arrive.

Speaking ahead of their Premier Sports Cup clash with Dunfermline, Gerrard said: "I'm well aware of how this club works and how it runs.

"We are a club that, if the right numbers land for our players, we do have to recycle.

"Nothing has been said to me since the game about being in a rush to do that.

"Nothing has changed with me wanting to keep our best players to give us the best chance of being successful moving forward, but I totally understand how the club runs and how it works.

"And if the right numbers land for one or a couple of individuals I know they'll be considered by the people above me.

"I’m not naive enough to sit here and think that the last two results won’t have an impact somewhere down the line.

"We've not had a realistic bid in black and white for any of our players or a serious phone call - that's the reality of it right now.

"But whether the Champions League progress had happened or not, I don't think it changes too much.

"If the right number lands for the right player I know the board are going to bring that to me."
