Steven Gerrard admits James Tavernier 'risk' as captain hasn't trained ahead of Leverkusen tie

Steven Gerrard has admitted there's an element of "risk" attached to James Tavernier's selection as the Rangers captain hasn't trained ahead of the Leverkusen match.

The skipper comes straight back into the team in place of Matt Polster at right back, and the Ibrox boss says he's delighted that both he and fellow injury doubt Scott Arfield are fit enough to start.

He told BT Sport: "They are players  who I trust within our system to go and carry a game plan out. Individually and as part of a team.

"Hopefully they can remain fit during the game as Tav comes with a bit of a risk. He hasn't trained. Hopefully they both get through it as they are a huge help to us."

Gerrard spoke about the importance of getting the Ibrox crowd on-side, adding: "These fans when they are in full voice and behind the team are up there with the best in Europe, if not the world, so we've already experienced that help.

"It's our responsibility to get them where we need them. We need to start the game on the front foot and really show a desire to go and make a right good game of this."
