Steven Gerrard addresses Rangers to Newcastle United talk as he makes 'looking on with interest' admission

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard admits he is watching developments at Newcastle United with interest after the big-money takeover.

Gerrard has been linked to taking over from Steve Bruce, who remains in position in the St James' Park hotseat going into this weekend's return to league action against Spurs.

The Saudi-led consortium who just purchased Newcastle from Mike Ashley are expected to replace Bruce, with bookmakers heavily linked the Rangers boss with a move to the English Premier League.

Antonio Conte, Frank Lampard, Brendan Rodgers and Paulo Fonseca have all been rumoured, but Gerrard wouldn't entertain questions on his future ahead of the top of the table showdown at Ibrox.

When asked about the talk of a move to the Magpies, Gerrard admitted he was keeping an eye on the situation on Tyneside due to Steve Bruce's 1000th game in charge.

The Rangers boss at his pre-match press conference: "I don't really react, or get involved in any kind of speculation, especially when there is someone who I have the utmost respect for sitting in that job, that the speculation is about.

"For me, I am in a very big job and a very big role here that I am very much fully focused on.

"We have got a top of the table clash at the weekend and it's a game I'm very much looking forward to.

"I've certainly got one eye on Newcastle, in terms of watching Brucey get his 1000th game. He's a great character of the game, someone who I've got a personal relationship with, and have the utmost respect for.

"I've really looking forward to seeing him get his 1000th game. I think it's a mammoth achievement.

"Sitting in this position, I certainly wouldn't like anybody to be speculating about my job, so I certainly won't be getting involved in any of the speculation towards his.

"I think it's interesting what is happening at Newcastle, I think if anyone deserves a break it's the Geordie fans, so I'm sure excitement levels are very high on the Toon.

"I'm sure everyone involved with the game is looking on with interest to see how it develops, but from a personal point of view I don't really get involved in speculation and I wish Steve all the best."
