Steven Gerrard a 'leading contender' for Newcastle job as Rangers boss named on three-man wanted list

Steven Gerrard is one of three leading contenders to replace Steve Bruce as Newcastle United boss.

The Rangers boss has been heavily linked with the soon-to-be-vacant managerial position at St James’ Park.

And, according to a report in The Times, Gerrard is on a three-man list the new Saudi-led owners of the Magpies want to succeed beleaguered Bruce who it will cost £8 million to sack.

The former Liverpool and England captain is said to be joined by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez and Villarreal and former Arsenal gaffer Unai Emery as the wanted mangers.

Newcastle kicked off a new era at the club with a 3-2 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur and that will see new chairman Yasir al-Rumayyan and director Amanda Staveley step up their search for a manager.

Gerrard is contracted at Ibrox until 2024 and won the Scottish Premiership title last season - the club’s first major trophy in a decade.

The 41-year-old has been touted as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool when the German eventually leaves Anfield.

Asked about speculation linking him with the job last week, Gerrard said: "I think it's interesting what's happening at Newcastle. I think if anyone deserves a break it's the Geordie fans."

Spaniard Martinez, who had a playing stint at Motherwell, is out of contract in the summer and has worked with current Magpies assistant Graeme Jones, who ended his playing career at Hamilton Accies, previously.

Martinez’s compatriot Emery had a miserable time in England with Arsenal but is another under consideration.

Bruce didn’t discuss his future following the Spurs defeat and said: "The owners have been very, very respectful.

“It will take time and patience, of course. I will wait until they see fit [to have talks] and we will see what they say. I am still convinced we can win a relegation battle, again.”
