Steven Gerrard a 'big fan' of Roy Keane as he names Ireland legend in World XI

Steven Gerrard was a big fan of Republic of Ireland legend Roy Keane when he was growing up, and even modelled his playing style around him.

The former Liverpool captain even included the Keane in his World XI of players he played against and those who currently play.

And he favoured him over Cristiano Ronaldo and other Manchester United greats under the stipulation of not being allowed to use more than one player from a club or country.

The current Rangers boss has opened up about the influence the Corkman had on his career, saying that facing him was a measure of how good you are as a footballer.

"He was a cert to go in there," Gerrard said about on the Sky Sports Football Show.

"He was someone I was a big fan of as I was growing up and I really studied his game.

"Then I had a lot of battles against him and he was a top player. I don't think you appreciated how good you were until you were up against him. He was fit and strong, a box-to-box midfielder and he had to go in."

Gerrard's most noteworthy emissions from his line-up were Bayern Munich and Germany full-back Philipp Lahm as well as legendary midfielder and current Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.
