Steven Davis urges Alfredo Morelos to remain at Rangers but admits Colombian is destined for the top

Steven Davis insists the sky’s the limit for Alfredo Morelos – but only if he continues to develop at Rangers.

Italian giants Lazio are reportedly leading the chase for the striker.

But midfielder Davis believes the Colombian is still a work in progress and that his career will be better served by another season in Glasgow, even though Gers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted there are no
guarantees his prize asset will remain at Ibrox and continue the form which saw him score 29 times last term.

But Northern Irish ace Davis issued a plea for the 24-year-old to stay put and prosper at a club where his goals have become priceless.

He said: “Of course, we want Alfredo to stay. Look
at the number of goals he
has scored.

“Even in my time here, his all-round game has improved 10-fold and he still has a lot of potential to improve even further.

“We understand the links. Scoring that number of goals, and the performances he’s put in especially in Euro games – there is always going to be clubs looking at him.

“But, as a squad, we want him here. He has a real desire to score goals and he’s improving all the time.

“Alfredo’s at a good age and is at a club where he can get better.

“Of course, if you lose that number of goals from the team, it would be difficult to replace – so we want him here for as long as possible.”

The Rangers squad flew to Lyon to compete alongside Celtic for the Veolia Trophy, missing only injured defender Niko Katic.

As Davis prepares to lift a gear in their pre-season preparations with games against the hosts and Nice, the 35-year-old can’t wait to get playing time under his belt after the lengthy lay-off due to coronavirus.

He said: “The whole approach to pre-season has been different for all of us – nothing we’ve been used to.

“We did a lot of work at the training ground but coming away here is the next step.

“These games will be a good test against quality opposition.

“At this stage it’s important to build up your match sharpness, but we also want to go out and put in a couple of good performances.

“We’re looking forward to these games.”
