Steven Davis reveals Rangers mentors as Ibrox veteran gives verdict on new signings

Rangers veteran Steven Davis admits he is always talking to former team-mates who played into their 40s as he targets playing for as long as he can.

The midfielder is still a vital player for Steven Gerrard at the age of 35 and continues to work hard on keeping himself in top condition.

He has played with various players who extended their careers by being top professionals, including his former Ibrox team-mates Gareth McAuley and David Weir.

Davis also lined up alongside McAuley for Northern Ireland and he admits he's been picking the brains of his old pals as he looks to keep his body ticking over.

Gerrard has been keen to add experience as well as youth to his squad and Davis isn't even close to the elder statesman of the Ibrox squad with Allan McGregor and Jermain Defoe both older than him.

But he wants to be around for a while as he told RangersTV: "It’s important to pick people’s brains and you obviously have Gareth McAuley, Davie Weir - who obviously I played with during my first spell at the club - people like Aaron Hughes as well. People who played into their late 30s and early 40s.

"Obviously you’ve got Jermain here as well who is in great shape so it’s important to pick up any little bits of information that might help you and extend your career."

The Northern Ireland captain could play up to 70 games in the next year with Rangers in four competitions and his country having playoffs, Nation's League and World Cup qualifiers.

But he reckons he just has to continue as he has over recent seasons and not try add too much.

He added: "I don’t think it’s any extra, we had the programmes during the break which was a new situation for us all. It’s probably the longest we’ve been away from the group in any of our careers so I kept trying to do the individual stuff as much as possible to try get back ready for pre-season.

"We all know the importance of pre-season for any player so we want to be as fit as possible and I just want to keep myself fit and hopefully by the time the season kicks off I’ll be ready to go."

Since returning to training, Davis has been joined by a trio of new signings with Ianis Hagi joining permanently after a loan spell, Calvin Bassey joining from Leicester and Jon McLaughlin signing on from Sunderland.

That's impressed Davis and he said: "We knew a bit about Ianis in terms of the quality he’s got and the potential he’s got as well so I’m delighted that he’s joined. Jon will bring some experience to the goalkeeping department again and try and push Greegs for that No. 1 spot. What I’ve seen of Calvin so far, he looks an exciting player."
