Steven Davis retirement talk shut down as Rangers midfielder gets Northern Ireland rave review

Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has clamped down on talk of Rangers star Steven Davis retiring from international football.

Davis equalled Peter Shilton's British record of 125 caps in the 2-0 World Cup qualifier defeat to Italy and played a key role in a strong second half showing from Baraclough's side.

Following last year's defeat in the Euro 2020 qualifying play-off final the 36-year-old has faced questions about his future on the international stage.

Having penned a new one year deal and impressed against the star-studded Italian side, former Motherwell boss Baraclough believes he can continue at the top level.

"Certainly any questions about Steven Davis should be put to bed, hopefully," Baraclough said.

"He was awesome in the middle of the park.

"He didn't look out of place at all, as I knew he wouldn't, so please stop trying to retire him."

Davis was at the centre of the second-half revival, and while happy with the record-equalling appearance, he was left disappointed with the result.

He said: "I take huge pride in equalling the record, but unfortunately it didn't have the fairy tale ending I would have liked.

"It's disappointing and we maybe weren't as aggressive in the first half as we were in the second, but we'll take positives from the game and move forward."
