Steven Davis rated Rangers scout's best ever signing as he told Walter Smith 'if he doesn't do it, sack me'

Former Rangers scout Ewan Chester put his job on the line as he was so determined to sign Steven Davis in 2008.

The Northern Ireland international was enduring a tough spell at Fulham - Chester's former club - when then manager Walter Smith came to the talent spotter needing a midfielder.

Davis fit the bill - but Smith needed some convincing.

And Chester revealed to BBC Sportsound he left himself open for the sack if the midfielder didn't deliver.

He subsequently enjoyed four successful years at Ibrox, before returning back in January 2019 under Steven Gerrard and is still going strong.

Chester, who was Smith's right-hand man for much of the Nine In A Row era before returning to Ibrox at various points since, rates Davis as his best ever capture.

He said: "The absolute best signing was Steven Davis.

"I was at Fulham and I came back to Rangers. Walter Smith said to me, 'we need to get some energy, some legs into midfield.'

"It came to January, and I said, 'Steven Davis.' Walter said, 'I know him, but I don't know him.'

"And I said, 'if he doesn't do it, sack me'.

"So the gaffer says sure, and I was sure. I went back to when Steven played against us at Fulham for Aston Villa.

"And Chris Coleman was the manager, he raved about him on the Monday morning. It was a strange one, he'd come to Fulham, Chris was replaced with Lawrie Sanchez who was previously the Northern Ireland manager, and yet he wasn't playing Steve Davis.

"Obviously I still had close contact with Fulham and the chief exec David McNally.

"I phoned David, I phoned Steven's agent, and he was at Rangers by the end of the week."

Chester is delighted to see Davis back at Ibrox and leading Rangers to titles again at the age of 36.

He added: "I take great pleasure in watching him now.

"He's a super professional and I think he's been absolutely key.

"I think in many respects, when Steven Davis plays, Rangers play."
