Steven Davis pens new Rangers deal and cites 'unfinished business' at Ibrox

Steven Davis has penned a one-year contract extension at Rangers, citing ‘unfinished’ business at Ibrox.

The experienced Northern Irish international will now remain with the Scottish Premiership champions until the summer of 2022.

That will take Davis to nearly eight years at the Light Blues across two spells and Davis was only too happy to continue his association with the club he’s supported since childhood.

And the carrot of Champions League football only made the decision easier.

He told the club’s website: “It is a privilege to play at Rangers and every game for my boyhood club is special.

"Winning 55 was a historic moment for all of us and especially for me, as I had always said that I had unfinished business at Ibrox. As the Manager has said, this is only the beginning and I am proud to continue as a Ranger for another season.

“We have plenty left to fight for this season and I am pleased that I have been able to contribute to the team. The manager and Ross [Wilson] were very open about their plans for me and the squad in the year ahead. I am excited for the future and especially to hear the Champions League music at Ibrox once again.”

Manager Steven Gerrard wants players who set standards around the club and Davis falls firmly into that category.

He said: “Steven embodies professionalism and continues to set the standards required to be a Rangers player. He has been instrumental this year, playing a key role in our league success.

“Ross and I have enjoyed open dialogue with him, and acknowledge how he has handled this contract extension. Steven is low-maintenance and has much more to give our team, not only for the rest of this season but beyond."

Director of Football Ross Wilson echoed those sentiments, having worked closely with Davis in England before being reunited at Ibrox.

He added: “It has been a pleasure to spend the best part of the last six seasons with Steven Davis both here at Rangers and at Southampton.

"We all know his qualities on the pitch but from working with him every day over the years, I see an outstanding professional going about his business, setting an excellent example to others.

“He would be the first to say that he’s surrounded by good people - his family, his friends and his representation. I’ve known Rob Segal for a long time and we concluded contract discussions very quickly.

“Steven loves being a Rangers player and he knows how much we all enjoy his continued influence at our club.”
